Did you look at the sourcecode already (or tried python at all ?) Some of the things on your wishlist can't be that hard and just playing with the sourcecode might help in understanding and implementing your needs.
... Hmmmm - I am hardly a programmer and did never touch Python ... but if I find some more time I will give it a look and perhaps a try ;-)
PS If you happen to go to WTH2005 next week I'm interested to just sit together and look at some of that. Working in person is often more rewarding :)
